BANGALORE: They have won themselves several recognitions like All India Radio Vocal Music Competition Awards in 1961, 1963 and 1964, Gana Sudhakara title in 1979, Rajyothsava Award from Government of Karnataka in 1992, Gana Kala Tilaka, Goa in 1995, apart from Musiri Subramanya Iyer Award from Music Academy in 1999, Karnataka Kalashree by Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy in 2003, Sangeetha Vidyanidhi by JSS Sangeetha Sabha, Mysore in 2005 and many more. The two now have another recognition coming their way — the title of Swaralayashrunga from Suswaralaya College of Music in the City.

R N Thyagarajan and his brother R N Tharanathan were initiated into music by their father Vidwan R K Narayanaswamy who is a singer himself and a disciple of Vidwan Musiri Subramanya Iyer. They have also been trained by their uncle violin vidwan R K Venkatarama Sastry, disciple of violin maestro Mysore T Chowdiah. Coming from a family of musicians from Rudrapatnam, a sleepy village in Hassan, Thyagarajan and Tharanathan are better known as Rudrapatnam brothers.

Their grandfather R K Krishna Sastry was a musician of repute, a Harikatha exponent, playwright and a scholar in Sanskrit and Kannada. Their uncle Sangeetha Kalanidhi R K Srikantan is also a noted musician. R N Thyagarajan has a post graduate degree in mathematics and is a retired deputy director of Doordarshan Kendra in Bangalore.

His brother Tharanathan, has a doctorate in Organic Chemistry and retired as additional director of the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition, CFTRI in Mysore. However music has always been a part of the siblings.

The duo had their first concert in 1956. Ever since then, they have been performing at top institutions all over the world accompanied by acclaimed musicians. Both A top grade artistes of AIR, they have been singing regularly for AIR since 1961. They have also been featured in national programmes and radio sangeeth sammelans several times. Besides, they have brought out several albums.

  1. It’s very nice to hear that the brothers are getting this award. Their chaste music never deviates from tradition and is always mellow and soothing to the ears. At least once a month I still listen to their Bhairavi and Shankarabharana alapanas rendered at a concert arranged by CMANA many years ago. My congratulations to them.
