Guardians of Kannada, backed by government organisations, may be making a big show in ensuring that the City is virtually painted in the language of the land.

Yet, the zealousness to go Kannada in some spheres, particularly Kannada lovers who want to paint their motor vehicle registration plates only in Kannada letters and numerals, could be illegal.

In fact, if one goes by the letter of the law, if vehicles bear plates carrying registration numbers only in Kannada letters and numerals, the plates can be termed defective. The vehicle owner can be penalised and even fined Rs 300.

RTO Jayanagar, Shafi Ahamed, told Deccan Herald, “According to Central Motor Vehicle (CMV) Act (Rule 50, d), the letters of the registration mark shall be in English and the figures in Arabic numerals.” But the State government has issued a notification in 2001 clearly stating that besides adhering to the CMV rules, vehicle users can also go in for Kannada plates. This means that the vehicles can have two number plates – one adhering to the compulsory CMV rules, while the other sticks to Kannada.

Will the City Traffic Police and RTO officials clamp down on vehicles with Kannada registration plates?

The traffic police sought to pass the buck to the RTO. Sources in RTO said that a notification is getting ready asking the department officials and the police to clamp down on vehicles carrying registration plates only with Kannada letters and numerals.

  1. Hi,

First respect local language and we have complete freedom to put number plate in Kannada number.

We can’t have bigger space to put the number both in kannada and English. After all we can put the number in Kannada.

    Regards,
    Nandisha

  7. Please dont misunderstand me. Some miscreants would deliberately write the vehicle registration nos in Kannada only and indulge in Goondaism (like hit and run, chain snatching and kidnapping etc). Many eyewitnesses would not be able to note the number quickly in case of such henious acts.
Being an outsider myself, I am staying in Bangalore, and I also know to speak and understand some Kannada, but not to read and write fluently. If some people are know only Kannada and not English, they can read and write articles in that language, but not such critical things like writing vehicle registration nos in Kannada only.

  8. All states shud adhere to law of having English board or having both English and Local language boards.

Wat if i have a kannada board on my car and go out to another state? and if i cause an offense, how will i be tracked?

Same for others, wat if a vehicle with a board in malayalam or tamil come to KA or AP and cause some accident ?

I think we needs to set aside cultural sentiments on this and have a standard rule accross the country. I mean, vehicle number plate is not where we need to show patriotism. It shud be in peoples hearts :)
