IT hub Bangalore to be renamed Bengaluru

Archana Patni

Wednesday, November 1, 2006 (Bangalore):

Ever since IT became the buzzword in India, Bangalore became a brand synonymous with this industry.

Now with its name changing to Bengaluru will the same brand appeal hold?

“The brand is a thought, a thought that lives in a persons mind. Now Bangalore, the city is a name, which lives in a persons mind. Internationally, if you want to create Bengaluru, it is a complete new thought altogether,” said Harish Bijoor, CEO, Harish Bijoor Consultants.

The other aspect to be considered is the cost of this name change that is it worth the whole exercise?

Experts say that the cost will run into crores but the government claims it will be negligible and will uphold people’s sentiments.

Over the next few days people working with big companies like IBM and Microsoft, will have to spend time changing their visiting cards and the name records.

Also perhaps teaching their business counterparts across the world on how exactly to pronounce the newly acquired name of the IT city of India.
