ಜಾಣರ ಸಾಲಿಗೆ, ಧನದಾಹಿಗಳ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳ ಅಮರಾವತಿಯಾದ ಅಮೆರಿಕೆಯೆಂಬ ‘ಮೋಹನ ಮುರಳಿ‘ ಚುಂಬಕತೆಯ ಸೆಳವಿಗೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಲು ಬಲವಾದ ಕಾರಣಗಳ ಅಗತ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ . ನಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಕಾಶ ಸಿಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕೊರಗಾದರೂ ಸರಿ, ಇಂಥ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದೆನೆಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕೀಳರಿಮೆಯಾದರೂ ಆದೀತು; ಯಾವುದೇ ನೆಪದಿಂದ ಅರಸಿ ಬರುವ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಯ ಅರಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅಗತ್ಯವಾದ ಸಂಕುಚನ ವಿಕಸನ ಅಮೆರಿಕೆಗೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಅದು ಅದರ ಅನನ್ಯತೆ.
ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರನ್ನೇ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ: ಸಿಲಿಕಾನ್ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಅಸ್ತಿಭಾರವಾಗಿ ದುಡಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ವರ್ಜೀನಿಯಾ, ಮಿನೆಸೊಟ, ಇಲಿನಾಯ್, ಕ್ಯಾಲಿಫೋರ್ನಿಯಾ, ಮುಂತಾದ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲೆಲ್ಲ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರು ಬಹುಸಂಖ್ಯಾತರು. ಅಂದಹಾಗೆ, ತವರಿಗಿಂತ ತೀರಾ ಭಿನ್ನವಾದ ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಇವರುಗಳ ಬದುಕು ಎಂಥದು? ಆಫೀಸ್ ಕೆಲಸದ ಹೊರತಾಗಿ ಇವರೆಲ್ಲ ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ? ಮುಖ್ಯವಾಗಿ, ನೆಮ್ಮದಿಯಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರಾ? ತವರ ಕರಕರೆಗೆ, ನೆನಪುಗಳಿಗೆ ಹನಿಗಣ್ಣಾಗುತ್ತಾರಾ? ಪರಕೀಯತೆ ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾರಾ?
ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಮೂರು ವರ್ಗದ ಜನರಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ : ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ವರ್ಗದವರು, ತಾವಿರುವ ಪರಿಸರವನ್ನೆ ತಮ್ಮದೆಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಸಂತೋಷವಾಗಿ ರೂಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಭಾವನೆಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಬದುಕು ದೊಡ್ಡದು. ಎರಡನೆಯ ವರ್ಗದ ಜನರು ಇರುವ ಪರಿಸರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗದೆ, ಹೊಂದುವ ಪರಿಸರಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳಲಾಗದೆ ನರಳುವವರು. ಈ ತ್ರಿಶಂಕು ಪರಿಸರದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಹೊರಳಿ ನರಳಿ ಬದುಕುವವರು. ಮೂರನೇ ವರ್ಗದ ಮಂದಿ- ಈ ಕಿರಿಕಿರಿಯೆಲ್ಲ ಯಾಕೆ ಎಂದು ತವರಿಗೆ ನಿಸೂರಾಗಿ ವಾಪಸ್ಸಾಗುವವರು.
ಮೇಲಿನ ಮೂರು ವರ್ಗಕ್ಕಿಂಥ ಭಿನ್ನವಾದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ವರ್ಗದ ಜನರೂ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮೇಲಿನ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಂಕಟ ತಲ್ಲಣಗಳು ಅವರವೂ ಆಗಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಅವರು ಮನೆಯೇ ಮಂತ್ರಾಲಯ ಅನ್ನುವವರು ಹಾಗೂ ಮನೆಯನ್ನೇ ಮಂತ್ರಾಲಯವಾಗಿ ಬದಲಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯ ಉಳ್ಳವರು. ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾದಷ್ಟು ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ತವರಿನ ಪರಿಸರವನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಅವರದು. ಅನೇಕ ಭಾರಿ ಅಂಥ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಗಳ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶ ಮೂಲಕ್ಕಿಂಥ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ, ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಇರುವುದೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯ! ಬೊಗಸೆಯಿದ್ದಷ್ಟು ಭಾಗ್ಯ!

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂತರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ನೆಲಮಂಗಲ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನ ಮಾರಪ್ಪನಪಾಳ್ಯ ಮೂಲದ ವಿ.ಎಂ.ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ (emaiL: NovaMed@aol.com) ಅವರದು ಅಮೆರಿಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎದ್ದು ಕಾಣುವ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದು. ‘ಕನ್ನಡ ಎಲ್ಲಿ ತುಳಿತಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ!’ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅವರ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಂದುವ ಒನ್ಲೈನರ್.
ಬರಿಯ ಕನ್ನಡಪ್ರೇಮಿ ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳಿದರೆ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಕುರಿತು ಏನನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳಿದಂತಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ . ಕನ್ನಡಪ್ರೇಮ, ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಳವಳಿಯನ್ನು ಅನ್ನವಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡವರು/ಜೀವನವಾಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡವರು ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಅಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆ ನಿಂತಿರುವುದು ಕನ್ನಡಾಭಿಮಾನದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ : ಉದ್ಯಮ, ಸಮಾಜಸೇವೆ, ಸಂಘಟನೆ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ-ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಪರಿಚಾರಿಕೆ.. ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಯಾವುದರಲ್ಲೂ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬಿದ್ದವರಲ್ಲ .
ಹ್ಯೂಸ್ಟನ್ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದಿಂದ ಹಿರಿಸಾವೆ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ವೇತನ ನೀಡುವವರೆಗೆ ಅವರ ಸಾಧನೆಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಬಿಳಲುಗಳುಂಟು. ಅದೇರೀತಿ, ಅಮೆರಿಕಾ ಹಾಗೂ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆ ಅವರ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಭಾಗವಾದ ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ಉದ್ದಿಮೆದಾರನ ಛಾಪುಂಟು. ಅವರು ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಮಾರ, ಸಾಧನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತ್ರಿವಿಕ್ರಮ!
1979 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಅಂಡ್ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಟ್ಸ್ ಕಂಪನಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ನೋವಾ ಕಂಪನೀಸ್ನ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರು (1989 ರಿಂದ) ಕೂಡ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಸ್ಕೈ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಕನ್ಸ್ಟ್ರಕ್ಷನ್ ಕಂಪನಿಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕಾರಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಾಗಿ (1971 ರಿಂದ 74) ದುಡಿದ ಅನುಭವವೂ ಅವರಿಗಿದೆ. ಟಸ್ಟಿನ್ನಲ್ಲಿನ 203 ಹಾಸಿಗೆ ಸಾಮರ್ಥ್ಯದ ಟಸ್ಟಿನ್ ಹಾಸ್ಪಿಟಲ್ ಮೆಡಿಕಲ್ ಸೆಂಟರ್ನ (Tustin Hospital Medical Center) ಮಾಲಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ (1989 ರಿಂದ 1992 ರವರೆಗೆ) ಯಶಸ್ವಿ ಉದ್ಯಮಿ ಅವರು.
ಕನ್ನಡವೆನೆ ಕುಣಿದಾಡುವ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ
ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡ ಲೇಖಕರಲ್ಲ ; ಲೇಖಕರ ಕುರಿತು ಗೌರವ ಉಳ್ಳ ಸಹೃದಯಿ. ಭಾರತ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ, ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸರ್ವತೋಮುಖ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಸದಾ ತುಡಿಯುವ ಮನಸ್ಸು. ಚಂದ್ರಶೇಖರ ಕಂಬಾರ, ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್.ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಅನೇಕ ಕನ್ನಡ ಲೇಖಕ, ಕಲಾವಿದರು ತಮ್ಮ ಅಮೆರಿಕ ಪ್ರವಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಆತಿಥ್ಯ ಉಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಕೆಲ ಸಾಧನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಕ್ಕುವುದಾದರೆ:
- ತಾಯಮ್ಮ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಸದಸ್ಯರಿಂದ ನಿಧಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿ, ಆದಿ ಚುಂಚನಗಿರಿ ಮಹಾಸಂಸ್ಥಾನದ ಸ್ವಾಮೀಜಿ ಉಪಯೋಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಮರ್ಸಿಡಿಸ್ ಬೆಂಜ್ ಕಾರು ಕೊಡುಗೆ.
- ತಂದೆಯ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ 2000 ಇಸವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಕಾಲರ್ಷಿಪ್ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ. ಹಾಸನ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಚನ್ನರಾಯಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಹಿರಿಸಾವೆಯ ಗರ್ಲ್ಸ್ ಎಲಿಮೆಂಟರಿ ಶಾಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಧ್ಯಮಿಕ ಶಾಲೆಯ ತಲಾ ಇಬ್ಬರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ವೇತನ. ಆರ್ಥಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹಿಂದುಳಿದ ಆರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಮವಸ್ತ್ರ ವಿತರಣೆ.
- ತಂದೆ ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪನವರ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ 1982 ರಿಂದ ಸ್ಕಾಲರ್ಷಿಪ್ (ಕೆನಡಾ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿರುವ ಕುಟುಂಬದ ಸದಸ್ಯರಿಂದ ನಿಧಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಣೆ)- ನೆಲಮಂಗಲದ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆಯ ಇಬ್ಬರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ನಾಗಮಂಗಲದ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಪ್ರೌಢಶಾಲೆಯ ಇಬ್ಬರು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ.
- ಹಂಪಿ ವಿಶ್ವ ವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿರುವ ಕುವೆಂಪು ಸಮಗ್ರ ಕಾವ್ಯ(ತಲಾ 1250 ಪುಟಗಳ ಎರಡು ಸಂಪುಟ. 3 ಸಾವಿರ ಪ್ರತಿ) ಕೃತಿ ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆಗೆ ಅಕ್ಕ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಯಾಗಿ ನಿಧಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಣೆ.
- ಬ್ರಿಟನ್ನಲ್ಲಿನ ಭಾರತೀಯ ವಿದ್ಯಾಭವನ ಕನ್ನಡ ತರಗತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಲು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಒತ್ತಡ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದು , ಆಕಾಶವಾಣಿಯ ಅಧಿಕೃತ ವೆಬ್ಸೈಟ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಹಾಡುಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ರೂಪಿಸಿದ್ದು , ಇವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಸಾಧನೆಗಳು.
ವಕ್ಕಲಿಗರ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಯಾಗಿ..
‘ಅಮೆರಿಕಾ ವಕ್ಕಲಿಗರ ಪರಿಷತ್ತು’ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಸಾಧನೆ ದೊಡ್ಡದು. 1998 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದ ವಕ್ಕಲಿಗರ ಪರಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನವನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ನಡೆಸಿದ ರೂವಾರಿ ಅವರು. ಮಾಜಿ ಪ್ರಧಾನಿ ಎಚ್.ಡಿ.ದೇವೇಗೌಡ ಈ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
1998 ರಿಂದ ಅಕ್ಕ ಕೂಟದ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟಿ , ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಾಗಿ- ಅಕ್ಕ ಕೂಟದ ಫೌಂಡರ್ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದ ವಕ್ಕಲಿಗರ ಪರಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಲ್ಲೊಬ್ಬರು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕ್ಯಾಲಿಫೋರ್ನಿಯಾದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಕ ಸಂಘಟನೆ, ಬಿಎಂಎಸ್ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಅಲ್ಯೂಮಿನಿ ಅಸೋಸಿಯೇಶನ್ ಆಫ್ ಅಮೇರಿಕಾದ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿಯಾಗಿ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರತರು.
ಕುಮಾರಸಂಭವ, ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ಇತಿ ವೃತ್ತಾಂತ
ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ತಂದೆ ಡಾ.ಪಿ.ವೆಂಕಟಪ್ಪ ವೈದ್ಯಾಧಿಕಾರಿ. ತಾಯಿ ವಿ.ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಮ್ಮ ಗೃಹಿಣಿ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಗ್ರಾಮಾಂತರ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ನೆಲಮಂಗಲ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನ ಮಾರಪ್ಪನಪಾಳ್ಯದ ವಿ.ಎಂ.ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು- ಮಂಡ್ಯ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ನಾಗಮಂಗಲ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕಿನ ಬಿಂಡಿಗನವಿಲೆ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ , ಮೇ 3 1949 ರಂದು.

ಬಿಎಂಎಸ್ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ 1971 ಸಿವಿಲ್ ಇಂಜಿನಿಯರಿಂಗ್ ಪದವಿ ಪೂರೈಸಿದ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ- ಬಿಎಂಎಸ್ ಕಾನೂನು ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾನೂನು ಪದವಿ (1971-74) ಪೂರೈಸಿದರು. ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದUniversity of Wiscosin Whitewater,ನಿಂದ ಎಂಬಿಎ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದ ಜಾಣ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಅವರು.
ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅವರ ಪತ್ನಿ ಸುಧಾರಾಣಿ ರಾಮಕೃಷ್ಣ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬಿಎಂಎಸ್ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಪದವಿ ಪಡೆದವರು. ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಸುಧಾರಾಣಿ ಅವರ ಮದುವೆ ನಡೆದದ್ದು 1974, ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 11 ರಂದು. ದಂಪತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೂವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳು : ಆರತಿಗೆ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಹಾಗೂ ರಜನಿ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ಕೀರುತಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ.
ಅಂದಹಾಗೆ, ಕನಸುಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅಮೆರಿಕೆಗೆ ಪಾದ ಬೆಳೆಸಿದ್ದು- 1975 ರ ಜನವರಿ 5 ರಂದು.
ಈಗ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಏನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ-
- ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದ ವಿಶ್ವ ವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯವೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪೀಠ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುವುದು ಅವರ ಕನಸು. ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ’ಅಕ್ಕ’ ಸಹಯೋಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧಿಯಾಂದನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಮೆರಿಕಾದಲ್ಲಿನ ಎಲ್ಲ ವಿಶ್ವ ವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯಗಳನ್ನು ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಪೀಠ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಗೆ ಪೆನ್ಸಿಲ್ವೇನಿಯಾ ವಿಶ್ವ ವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದೆ.

- ವಿಶ್ವಾದ್ಯಂತ ಇರುವ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಂಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರವಾಸೋದ್ಯಮವನ್ನು ಪ್ರೋತ್ರಾಹಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳ ಸಮಾನ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮವನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸುವ ಭಗೀರಥ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ.
- ಲಾಸ್ ಏಂಜಲೀಸ್ನ ಕ್ಯಾಲಿಫೋರ್ನಿಯಾ ವಿಶ್ವ ವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಪಡೆ ನಡುವೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಕೊಂಡಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುವ ಮೂಲಕ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ಆರೋಗ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸುವ ಯೋಜನೆಗೆ ಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಚಾಲನೆ ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಯೋಜನೆ ಪ್ರಗತಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

“ಈ-ಕವಿ” ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ಕನ್ನಡನುಡಿಗಾಗಿ, ಕನ್ನಡನಾಡಿಗಾಗಿ, ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗಾಗಿ ಸದಾಕಾಲ ದುಡಿಯುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಅನೇಕ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.”ಈ-ಕವಿ” ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯು ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ದತ್ತುತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ, ಬಡ ಹಾಗು ಪ್ರತಿಭಾವಂತ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿವೇತನವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುವ, ಬಡಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳನ್ನು ದತ್ತು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ, ಕೊಳಗೇರಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಮಾಡಿ ಅವರ ಕಷ್ಟ ಸುಖಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸುವ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಈ ಗುರಿಯನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ “ಈ-ಕವಿ” ಪ್ರತಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ಪ್ರತಿ ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಖೆಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದರಿಂದಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ, ತಾಲ್ಲೂಕು, ಹೋಬಳಿ, ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚಿಂತಿಸಿ, ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿದ ಊರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುವ ಒಂದು ಸುವರ್ಣಾವಕಾಶ “ಈ-ಕವಿ” ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಲ್ಪಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಬನ್ನಿ ಸೋದರರೇ , ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಒಂದಾಗಿ ದುಡಿಯೋಣ.

Gokak Falls – Karnataka’s Niagara
A relatively unknown but exotic tourist getaway is Karnataka’s Gokak falls. Often compared to the globally famous Niagara falls this thundering waterbody is sited in the Belgaum district of Karnataka state. Sited in a picture postcard location between two tall, craggy cliffs in Gokak falls is an ideal soul-soothing destination.
One can hear the roar of the fall much before it actually comes into sight. Gokak falls is formed when the Ghataprabha river after flowing through the black soil plains enters the rocky belt of Gokak where the flow of the river is broken by a tableland about 180 ft above the neighbouring valley, forcing the river to take a giant leap over the sandstone cliff, into a horseshoe shaped gorge. The falling river makes a thundering noise.
This is one of the few falls which one can get to the top and look down into the gorge where the water is falling down into the dizzying depths. The closer one gets to the fall and the louder one hears the roar of the water falling down into the valley is deafening. The sound makes it difficult to even make simple conversation and one has to shout hoarse to be heard. A walk along the cliffs beside the jumping waters is a soothing experience and provides panoramic views of rugged cliffs and water. Being an open space there is always a cool breeze bringing with it a gentle spray of moisture from the waterfalls.
The horseshoe shaped waterfall spans a breadth of 177 meters as it sweeps over the brink of the cliff, presents an awe-inspiring sight. The best time to view and enjoy the glory of the Gokak falls is from June-October when it rains in the region. According to the Mysore State Gazetteer Gokak falls was discovered in 1885 by British explorers, who described the falls thus: “Except in width and colour of water, the general features of the fall, its height, shape and rapidity above are very much like those of the Niagara.”
Soon after the discovery of the falls, the British established the Gokak Water Power and Manufacturing Company – a textile mill – with an investment of Rs.20 lakh. Later in 1907-08 the company installed an electric turbine to generate hydro-electricity. The town’s colonial past is resplendent in the mill’s elegant stone buildings. The mill and the power plant are operational even today and the main activity of the former is conversion of Cotton into yarn.
Another important historical landmark here is the 210-metre long hanging wooden bridge built across the river built in 1907 to enable workers from nearby villages to cross the river and arrive at work. A walk on this century old creaking bridge – on which only 30 people are allowed at a time – is a thrilling experience. One can view the breathtaking vista of the waterfalls directly below as one walks across the bridge.
The riverside temple dedicated to Lord Mahalingeshwara. Locally known as Tarakeshwara temple (as described in an inscription dated 1153 A.D of Ratta Kartaveerya III found inside the temple), the Mahalingeshwara temple is a large and sprawling structure built in the Later Chalukyan style of architecture. The temple has a garbhagriha, (sanctum), an ardhamantapa and a spacious but open mukhamantapa (frontal courtyard). The sanctum with its tall Shikara adorned with exquisite sculptures is a sight to behold.
Getting there
Road. Gokak Falls is a mere six km from Gokak town and 71 km from Belgaum. Every 15 minutes a bus departs from Belgaum’s Khade Bazaar bus terminus to Gokak.
Rail. Ghataprabha railway station about 3 km from Gokak town is the nearest railhead. The Gokak falls is about 7 km from the railway station.
Air. Belgaum has a civilian airport at Sambra. Deccan Aviation operates regular flights from all major cities across the country.

Were we interested in cooperation?
Kannada is spoken by more than 50 million people, mainly in Karnataka, India. In Europe we tend to see India as a nation with one culture, but differences between the states are to be compared with those between the different European countries.
In december 2006, I went to Bangalore to finalize cooperation with the institute. As it happened, the Suchitra Bengalooru International Film Festival was held between December 22nd and 28th, and Mr Ravindranath and I watched many films, paying a lot of attention to the subtitling. In many cases we saw clearly how feature films suffered because of bad subtitling.

- Katha prize stories. Published annually since 1991. Contain stories translated into English from various Indic languages. The objective would be to collect the original short stories and augment them with glossaries for use in readers.
- Rapidex volumes for English instruction, mostly for the sake of the vocabularies, which might be used as core vocabularies. One example is the Bengali conversation and phrase book, Rapidex English speaking course. Delhi : Pustak Mahal, 1988.
- A vehicle for capturing Web documents in various idiosyncratic encoding systems and converting them to Unicode for use in language pedagogy.

This is a start on getting some information to you about the place of
Kannada at the University of Pennsylvania, now and in the future.
The South Asia Regional Studies department is the oldest department in the
US devoted to the study of South Asia. A year or two ago we celebrated
our 50th anniversary, and the department obviously has played a strong
role in the development of South Asian studies in this country. Many of
its graduates have gone on to teach in other programs that have come up
since the founding of this one. (I will supply you with supplementary
information about the history of the program and department.) The program
has also been the beneficiary of a U.S. Department of Education Title 6
grant for a “Center for South Asian STudies” and there is more information

My own history of involvement with Kannada is as follows. I studied Tamil
and Kannada at the University of Chicago with Prof. A. K. Ramanujan, who
was the supervisor of my M.A. (1966) and Ph.D. committees (1969) in
Linguistics. After I went to India in 1965, I also studied Kannada there
at Annamalai University, and completed my M.A. thesis on Kannada
(”Morphophonemics of the Kannada Verb”) which was also published in the
journal Glossa in 1968 as an article.
In the summer of 1970 I taught Kannada at the University of Washington,
and in summer 1972 also at the University of Texas, under a program of
summer institutes then sponsored by a consortium of western universities.
(This consortium has since lapsed, so Kannada is not taught anywhere in
the western states, except for the times I taught it.) While at the
University of Washington, I received a grant from the Office of Education,
Institute of International Studies, for a “Reference Grammar of Spoken
Kannada,” which I produced in 1979; this was subsequently published by the
University of Washington Press in 1983. In 1991, I also published a short
entry entitled ” Kannada” in the Oxford International Encyclopedia of
Linguistics, Vol. II, pp. 266-268. Oxford: the Clarendon Press, edited by
Wm. Bright.
After I came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1995, we made some
efforts to try to get Kannada taught and this began in a small way in
1997, with courses mostly for “heritage” learners (children of
Indo-Americans at Penn) but with some non-heritage learners as well who
are doing research in India on Karnataka etc. This has continued to the
present, taught by a local Kannadiga lady who does this part-time, mostly
as a “labor of love.” Our mutual friend Ananthamurthi has also visited
here and will probably come again to grace us with his presence.
I would like very much to visit any of the Kannada Koota’s that are having
meetings either in this area, or in California when I am there. (I will
be visiting my mother in San Diego from July 21 to 25, and after that am
free to meet with people either in southern or northern California.) I
could also go to Triveni in Baltimore, and since I live in New Jersey,
could easily attend a meeting of the NJ Koota, too.
I very much liked hearing about the idea of an exchange with the
University of Hampi, since that might make it possible for young scholars
from there to come here and vice versa. Perhaps someone could come from
there to teach elementary courses etc. (details to be worked out).
I would like to see many research projects that such a collaboration could
entail–work on electronic dictionaries, Kannada software for research,
perhaps a modern grammar of literary Kannada (to replace Spencer’s out of
print work), and all kinds of other things.
I am assembling some printed materials to send you about the history of
our program, and will also send this email as a printed letter.
